Idiot Savant 00004 Stock Picking without Luggage
Orthodontic Centers of America Inc
A chip of my favourite wood. A timeless business with a solid base beaten down and dragged through mud. Nevertheless, just like SRZ (old peeps biz) SRV and STEI (6-feet under biz) OCA (teeth biz) is quite likely to climb to her previous appreciation. It can be as soon as tomorrow as it can take years. Based on previous trading experience with troubled stocks, prudent trading might be the reasonable thing to do. To buy some at dips and put immediately a reasonable GTC sell order to enjoy the first revival. But be ready to freeze your capital for some years, active shorters are worse then a pack of hyenas.
How long can OCA's agony go on? With the outrageous short ratio (42.54%), it might be for quite a while, huge powers are doing everything they can to keep it down and possibly lower.
On the other hand, once the outcome of ongoing trials is clear or on a technical upwards breakthrough from the current triangle, the short covering on this one can be spectacular. Due to the lawsuits the institutional had to step out of OCA, although many are just aching to have such a share in their portfolios.
We got in at $6,51 and the very next day OCA was trading as low as $6,00. With a GTC limit of 7.23 to net 10% we were quite fortunate to sell our lot at $7,30 3 market days after our purchase, meanwhile OCA is quoting under the $7,00 again. This one stays for sure on our watch list and if we got the cash at the good momentum we'll get some again. But one has to be prudent and strong hearted when dancing with OCA.
Behold the newly picked:
- NYFIX Inc NYFX for about € 2000 (1/3 of the mainstream part).

Idiot Savant 00003 Stock Picking without Luggage
American Mortgage Acceptance Company
For these lost times we live in it will not hurt to have a good old granny stock in the portfolio. AMC is not a stock that will double overnight, but the old lady takes care of herself. As a Real Estate Investment Trust she's supposed to distribute at least 90% of her taxable income in dividends. What results in a current quarterly dividend on an annualized basis of $1,60 per share. At the current quotation the Yield is no less then 9,04% and the short re-appreciation period after the ex-dividend date is also quite remarkable.
The downside of AMC is the relatively short track record and low trading volume.
The upsides are numerous though:
Price/Book: 0,96
ROE: 10,64%
Dividend Yield: 9,06%
Total Debt/Equity: 0
Cash per share: $1,17
Behold the newly picked:
- Redhook Ale Brewery Inc HOOK for about € 1600 (1/4 of the SC part).
- Orthodontic Centers of America OCA for about € 2100 (1/3 of the mainstream part).

L'ombelico del mondo 00005
Could it be?
Does anybody remember South America? While the continent was beautiful and successful suddenly 'terrorists' appear. The misguided people empowered their police and army to end this terrorism by all means. As by magic the bombing stopped and as by magic ... countless people disappeared too. The enemies of the state were gone, the state became the enemy.
Was it a mere coincidence that some of USA's best customers were becoming equals and competitors? Was it a coincidence that some countries wanted to take the land of US corporations to give it the people? Today all those countries are still crippled. Is it normal that only the powers that be became better of terrorism?
With that in mind. The Spanish powers sucked up to the ones who gained the most out of terror. Isn't such an event a ticket to get rid of all your opponents? Basque and other? Democratic totalitarianism can only thrive in a climate of fear and rage and such a climate is easy to establish.
The bombing is just too well organised to have been done by the ETA or al-Qaeda. And why would the ETA sign his own death treaty by doing this?
Scary to imagine that reality can be worse then 24.

Idiot Savant 00002 Stock Picking without Luggage
Well, this was a fortunate week. CTCI and TFS are already up and away.
Three-Five Systems Inc TFS first caught my attention while browsing fundamentals listings and was amongst the first 20 selected stocks. Reading an article on Au Optronics AUO and Planar PLNR made TFS even more attractive. The flat screen market was taken off and somehow TFS stayed behind. If TFS would meet the price/book and price/sales of Planar and Au Optronics it might even double. But like we are not too greedy we're happy with a 15% gain. Furthermore if we don't leave something for the one that buys our picks he won't be able to buy from us the next time we're selling.
CT Communications Inc CTCI made it also based on near perfect fundamentals and had even a very nice ROE and dividend. This one was a sure pick and the very same week Forbes made it Bargain Of The Week. For once I agreed with a spotlighted pick, usually they're quite overpriced. Nevertheless I don't see this one double soon but a 25% target seemed reasonable. Therefore we're happy with a 10% gain.
It's always easy to give a nice motivation after something went well. I wanted to do this from time to time, stock by stock. But the market was faster then me. Back to the research to seek out those bargains that are out there.
