Idiot Savant 00001 Stock Picking without Luggage
Someone had the odd idea to consult me for some market advice. Like I have all my resources and time tied up in renovation works, I was delighted to set my teeth in the market for a change. Seeking stocks with strong fundamentals in the vast ocean of free available data.
- A very low debt rate. In exchange of their freedom, privacy and absolute control, firms receive money for nothing. That should give them a good start. When despite that they start borrowing, something must be fishy.
- Quoting close or under Book Value. When the theoretically net value of the assets is greater or equal to the market price, one as a chance to have good value for money.
- Insider interest. Why would you put your money in a company when the management thinks its better elsewhere?
- Earnings. I do love low PE's, great ROE's & dividends. But like planting a fruit tree, it often takes time before there's a profitable harvest. When there is a reasonable hope on future harvests we can sin on the profit side.
- Taste, diversity, technical analyses and compromising. Of all the US quoted stocks, only 1 had it all for me and before we could buy it, it soared already over target. So we have to be flexible on some criteria while being more severe on the remaining. The best bargains are often quite illiquid and out fashion, if they weren't, they would be quoted much higher. When buying Small Caps one has often to be patient and have a strong tummy.
Behold the result of 100 hours of market research for a € 12.500 portfolio:
€ 6.000 is spread over 3 stocks with a decent trading volume.
- American Mortgage Accepta AMC
- CT Communications Inc CTCI
- Great American Financial GFR
€ 6.000 is spread over 4 more illiquid stocks
- APA Optics Inc APAT
- First Aviation Services FAVS
- ImmuCell Systems Inc ICCC
- Three-Five Systems Inc TFS
€ 500 remains on the side for brokerage, taxes and to maybe take an 8 stock on board after extra cash generation by some profit taking.
Our targets are between 15 % and 25% within a year for these 7 stocks. To have a net profit margin of 10% would be a nice performance indeed. I'll keep the Friday closure on the side, post the motivations for each purchase and keep track of the changes in the portfolio.
Warning
- Do not buy anything you do not fully comprehend. Stocks for instance.
Do not buy anything without making your own investigation.
Do not buy anything if you can't explain your motivation, 'Market Feeling' is not a motivation.
Do not buy anything just because I or anybody else did.

Hotchkiss, an engineer who won a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award, used a simple research method to come up with his innovative design. "I visited people who make wheelchairs in remote regions," he said, "and stole their ideas."
The front wheel design is from an African pushcart, the rear hub from a British motorcycle wheel rebuilt in Nicaragua. It's welded together using the technique of mechanics in Zimbabwe, with tubular armrests adapted from an ancient Japanese wheelchair by craftsmen in the Philippines.
The Torbellino - the Land Rover of wheelchairs - is made for $100 in a small Sri Lankan shop and can be repaired by anyone who can fix a bicycle. "It's the very ordinariness," says Hotchkiss, "that makes it so beautiful - and useful."

Squat on the loo, it's good for you!
Two-thirds of humanity use the squatting position to answer the call of nature.
In those cultures, appendicitis, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, colitis, prostate disorders and colon cancer are virtually unknown.
